The human body - and in particular the skin and the eyes - has many different interactions with light. Light therapy on the skin can be used to treat skin disorders, chiefly psoriasis, acne vulgaris, eczema and neonatal jaundice. Light can be used to reduce pain, accelerate wound healing and in treating acne. In addition light is also important in the generation of vitamin D3, which is amongst others important in preventing osteoporosis.
Light therapy which strikes the retina of the eyes is used to treat diabetic retinopathy and also circadian rhythm disorders such as delayed sleep phase disorder. It can also be used to treat seasonal affective disorder, with some support for its use also with non-seasonal psychiatric disorders.
